Go Where Your Shoulders Lower

Go Where Your Shoulders Lower

There is a question I have been asking myself lately.
Not what do I want to accomplish?
Not where do I need to be?
But rather...
Where do I become more myself?
Perhaps that is the better question.

Go where you can be soft.
I like being soft.
I like my speaking voice.
I like the way I touch.
I like the way I move through the world.
Softness is not weakness.
It is one of the ways I know myself.

Go where you can be feminine.
Go where you can be soft.
Go where you can be playful.
A woman who plays has made room for joy.
Play is not the absence of responsibility.
It is evidence that responsibility has not consumed her.
Go where you can laugh without restraint.
Go where you don't have to perform.
Go where you don't have to explain yourself.
Go where you can simply be.

Go where your shoulders lower.
Our bodies often know before our minds do.
Pay attention.
When your shoulders rise...
When your jaw tightens...
When your breathing becomes shallow...
Ask yourself why.
Go where your shoulders lower.

Go where you can breathe.
There are people who make us brace ourselves.
And there are people in whose presence we simply breathe.
If I look at you...
and I can breathe...
I stay.

Stay there as long as you can.
A well-lived life is not a perfect life.
It is still messy.
It is still unfinished.
It is still wonderfully human.
And yet...
there is still room for beauty.
Still room for laughter.
Still room for softness.
Still room to breathe.
Whenever you find a place—or a person—that allows you to become more yourself...
Stay there as long as you can.
